North London Waste Authority - latest statement on COVID-19
This is to enable us to comply with the latest Government guidance on measures to slow the spread of COVID-19. This includes the instruction to members of the public not to travel unless it’s essential, and not to gather in groups larger than two.
We will continue to work with our contractors and borough partners to take appropriate action to ensure that north London continues to provide an effective waste collection and disposal service to residents, and to ensure the safety of our staff.
Cllr Clyde Loakes, Chair of NLWA, said: “We all have our part to play in halting the spread of COVID-19. We now believe it is therefore the right and responsible decision to close all our reuse and recycling centres.
“I would urge all north London residents to make the most of their household waste and recycling collections, and to use them responsibly during this time. We have a wealth of information available at wiseuptowaste.org.uk, and on social media, to help residents reduce their waste. Working together we can ensure north London continues to provide effective waste collection and disposal services during these most unusual of times.”
More information about what can be recycled in household collection services is available here. For more information about local waste and recycling collection services, residents should visit their borough’s website.
Information from Public Health England about the correct disposal of household waste that is potentially contaminated by COVID-19 is available here. Tissues and sanitary waste, such as face masks, should never be put in the recycling. Contaminated or potentially contaminated tissues and sanitary waste should be double bagged, the bags closed, and left for 72 hours before being put out with the general household waste. This is to reduce the risk of infection to collection and disposal crews.
We are monitoring the developing situation around the COVID-19 outbreak. Further updates will be available on wiseuptowaste.org.uk
