During the summer of 2016, for the third year running, we held our popular Waste Less, Lunch Free events in north London. Passers-by were offered a free lunch - a savoury and a sweet dish taken from recipes in the North London Food Lovers’ Cookbook. They also had the chance to speak to trained staff who provided advice on how to waste less food, or recycle unavoidable food waste, and watch live cookery demonstrations.
What’s it all about?
The average family could save £700 per year if they reduced the amount of food they waste. At our Waste Less, Lunch Free events, we use this budget of £700 to prepare 1,000 portions of food in each north London borough. It is also our aim to speak with as many people as possible, providing advice and exchanging top tips about how to waste less food, or recycle unavoidable food waste.
What did we achieve?
In September 2016, we held seven Waste Less, Lunch Free events, one in each of the north London boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest). By offering free portions of food, we managed to speak with 2,618 people about reducing their food waste, and gave them free information leaflets and portion-measuring tools to help. We also spoke with 1,598 residents about food waste recycling, because some 'unavoidable' food waste, such as peelings and apple cores, can be collected by the local council and recycled.
