During the summer of 2017 and for a fourth year running, we held our popular Waste Less, Lunch Free events. From June to August, we held seven Waste Less, Lunch Free events, one in each of the north London boroughs (Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest).
What’s it all about?
The average family could save £700 per year if they reduced the amount of food they waste. At our Waste Less, Lunch Free events, passers-by watched live cookery demonstrations and were offered free tasters. All food was made from ingredients that would otherwise gone to waste and recipes were inspired from the North London Food Lovers' Cookbook. Attendees also had the chance to speak to trained staff who provided advice on how to waste less food and save money, or recycle unavoidable food waste.
What did we achieve?
Across the events we managed to speak with 2,543 people about reducing their food waste, and gave them free information leaflets and portion-measuring tools to help. We also spoke with 1,525 residents about food waste recycling, because some unavoidable food waste, such as peelings and apple cores, can be collected by the local council and recycled.
